I am still backyard bird watching but there has not been many new species to report on. Over the last several days I have been hearing some very melodic bird songs but have not been able to see the bird for an ID. Today I finally spotted a bird loudly vocalizing atop a fir tree, but it flew off before I could get my binoculars and camera. I narrowed down the possible species to three and I played their calls for Amy and asked her opinion on which one we had just heard. She said it sounded most like the Western Tanager. So I wandered off in an attempt to see it again. A short time later, Iwas able to get a photo. She was spot on as it was a Western Tanager!
I am still trying to get a photo of the nuthatch I have been hearing but so far no luck. I did get a photo of a one of the Violet-green Swallows that have been flying around.
I will keep hunting for that nuthatch and any other species that may be near!
Nice pic of Western Tanager. We have been getting them too as well as Black-headed Grosbeak which sounds quite similar, so we always have a discussion.
ReplyDeleteI love the Tanager! Some folks in the Willamette Valley have seen Lazuli Bunting! I’d like to find one too.
