I had a nice surprise this week when Jay and I went to Winchester Bay to try our hand at crabbing. The first good news was that we got 4 keeper Dungeness and a dozen Red Rock crabs for a delicious meal later that day. The other good news is that there are campgrounds open here! I am now at the Salmon Harbor Marina where I plan to spend t least a week fishing and crabbing! The campground is a large paved parking area but a lot of the sites back up to the water! Even though the campsites are drab,
the view from my window is great!
I took a quick bird walk to get the feel of the area and I was surprised to see a couple of Savannah Sparrows at the end of the parking are!
I am looking forward to some fun adventures here this week!

Who is that singing?
I am still backyard bird watching but there has not been many new species to report on. Over the last several days I have been hearing some very melodic bird songs but have not been able to see the bird for an ID. Today I finally spotted a bird loudly vocalizing atop a fir tree, but it flew off before I could get my binoculars and camera. I narrowed down the possible species to three and I played their calls for Amy and asked her opinion on which one we had just heard. She said it sounded most like the Western Tanager. So I wandered off in an attempt to see it again. A short time later, Iwas able to get a photo. She was spot on as it was a Western Tanager!
I am still trying to get a photo of the nuthatch I have been hearing but so far no luck. I did get a photo of a one of the Violet-green Swallows that have been flying around.
I will keep hunting for that nuthatch and any other species that may be near!
